Trees and Development

Trees play an important role in development, both tree retention and new planting contribute positively to the environment, visual amenity, and property values. Trees are a material consideration in the planning process, guidance in the form of  BS5837 (2012): ‘Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction – recommendations’ assists in the management of trees in relation to the design, demolition and construction associated with new developments. The British Standard is the principal national document concerning trees and development, it provides recommendations on the principles to be applied to achieve a satisfactory relationship between trees and new development. Local planning authorities usually require some level of compliance with the Standard.

Development can be detrimental to trees; the planning system helps to drive careful construction and protection measures for those trees identified for retention. Arboretum Internationale offers practical advice and information on how to manage trees and woodlands as assets to a development project, rather than constraints that limit development.

Typically, we will provide tree surveys, arboricultural impact assessments, and arboricultural method statements to support planning applications and we provide arboricultural clerk of works monitoring and supervision of sites throughout the construction phase of new developments.
